Think of this as like a “smash or pass” podcast list where I give you enough information to make an informed decision about whether or not you’ll be DTL (down to listen.) For weekly updates that are much more frequent than the newsletter please subscribe to one of the options below:

As always, thank you so much for supporting the show by listening. If you’d like to support the show in other meaningful ways, here are the best ways to do it.
Text a friend the link to your favorite episode of the show. Only friends can send each other a message like, “Hey girl, it’s been a minute. Anyway here’s an episode of a luxury dominatrix talking for 2 hours about electric butt plugs and the meaning of life. Brunch this weekend?!”
Rate the podcast on Spotify and iTunes. This is a 30-second task that makes a GIGANTIC difference. Let me put it this way: the same show with 100 ratings on Spotify versus 10 ratings on Spotify will get recommended 2-3x more often by Spotify’s algorithm. I hate algorithm talk, but it’s a necessary evil of the podcast biz. Thank you. Also, you can only rate on the mobile app so make sure you click the link on your phone and not a laptop.
Subscribe to AUXORO Premium. For $5 per month, you get bonus episodes, access to the entire back catalog of bonus episodes (40+ hours), and exclusive AMA’s. The $5 per month of support gives you more content as the listener and allows me to outsource more editing as the host to spend more time on the creative aspect of the podcast. All in all, it’s a win-win for both of us. You get more good content and I can make more, better content with financial support. Thank you.
SOMETHING I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT:
“Listening is suspended disbelief.” - Rick Rubin (from The Creative Act: A Way Of Being).
The past few weeks, this quote by Rick Rubin has been rattling my brain. “Listening is suspended disbelief.” When I first started podcasting, I’d come into each episode ready with talking points to challenge each guest on their body of work. You read that correctly. Me, a 25-year-old podcaster (at the time) would do 3-4 days of research on a guest’s often decades-long body of work and I thought I would somehow make them “see the light” with my intelligent pushbacks grounded in 8-10 hours of google searching.
While pushing back in a playful manner is an important part of any meaningful conversation, I’ve stopped coming into each episode with a list of debate topics ready to make things heated and started listening with a less judgemental ear. To me, “suspending disbelief,” is a more concise way of saying “quieting the part of your mind that screams BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT I READ or COOL STORY, LET ME TELL MINE NOW.”
I enjoy debate-style shows or shows where the host completely takes over the ride of the episode, but that’s just not me. I’ve found that diving deeply into the guest’s perspective and becoming curious about their experience, regardless of my contrary beliefs, brings us to a much more meaningful place in the conversation. And, when I do push back, it comes from a place of curiosity not out of reflex.
Even Joe Rogan whose most viral clips include heated debates on his podcast rarely engages in debate. As an avid listener of JRE, I can think of 3-4 moments out of the hundreds of episodes I’ve consumed where Joe is actively debating the guest’s point of view. Most of the time, he’s listening, sharing experiences, and becoming interested in different perspectives rather than becoming defensive.
Everything involves balance. I’m not saying to suppress your opinion. I’m saying that the most meaningful moments I’ve had as a podcast host have come when I’ve had a reflexive, defensive thought about something the guest said, and rather than follow that knee-jerk reaction, I became interested in the guest’s words while even pointing out my reflexive thought.
I may have said something like, “Wow, everything I’ve read about that situation comes to the exact opposite conclusion. What made you look into that side of it?”
Suspending is not the same as suppressing. Eventually, the time may come to push back. But the timing of that push-back is the difference between a defensive backlash that derails the episode and a curious disagreement that enhances the conversation.
People may call you weak for taking this approach, and that’s fine. After 300+ episodes as I host, I can tell you it takes much more strength and vulnerability to truly listen to someone speak than it does to offer a pre-planned or undigested rebuttal to satisfy the ego. I should know, I’ve done both.
By the way, if you do anything creative (aka if you are human), go check out Rick Rubin’s book. It’s not a how-to manual full of answers to “success.” As the title says, it’s a way of being filled with tons of suggestions and zero answers. Within two months of picking it up, I’ve already made multiple major changes to my podcasting philosophy inspired by the book.
